Click Smart, Spend Smart

It can be all too easy to buy things online. The rise of Amazon and other digital retailers makes it possible to shop without leaving your house, or even your bed! With stored cards, tap to pay, and one click checkout, purchases happen in seconds. That convenience is powerful, but it can also make spending feel almost invisible. But the money is as real as ever.

How you pay matters as much as what you buy. Cash, credit cards, Apple Pay, Venmo, Cash App, and PayPal are widely accepted, and many retailers offer buy now, pay later plans. Psychologists have found that electronic payments tend to “hurt less” than handing over cash. When you do not see money physically leaving your hands, it is easier to overspend.

Social media adds even more pressure. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok Shop blend entertainment and shopping. In 2024, shoppers under 60 reportedly spent just over $700 on TikTok Shop on average, and 37 percent made purchases there. Many influencers post content tied to products, even when it does not feel like a traditional ad. Scrolling can quickly turn into spending.

That is why one simple question matters more than ever: Is it a want or a need? A need is something essential, like groceries, school supplies, or basic clothing. A want is something you would enjoy but could live without, like the newest gadget, trendy shoes, or a product you saw in a video. Online shopping and social media can makes wants feel urgent. Limited time deals, glowing reviews, and easy checkout can make it seem like you must buy right now.

To be smart online, add friction. Turn off one click checkout, remove saved payment methods, or wait 24 hours before purchasing. Give yourself time to decide whether the item is truly necessary. Track your spending and maybe even only go to the store with as much cash as you want to spend.

Cashless payments are everywhere. Asking yourself whether something is a want or a need can help you slow down, think clearly, and stay in control of your money.
