One of the best parts of a new school year is shopping for new school supplies. Making sure you have the right supplies will help set you up for academic success! But back-to-school shopping can get expensive and overwhelming. How do you decide what to buy while staying within budget, without sacrificing quality?
Even though the costs can add up, here are some smart ways to shop and save while gearing up for a great school year.
First, check your school or community for free school supply drives, often offered in summer before school starts. You can also reuse supplies from a sibling or last year — a penny saved is a penny earned! Buying used works too. Items like binders, clipboards, and pencil cases can often be found at your local thrift store. Some items, though, are better bought new. Look for off-brand options, or stick with a brand you trust — better to spend a little more than replace it halfway through the year! Buying in bulk helps too. Shopping at retailers like Costco or Sam’s Club can save you serious cash.
Timing your purchases can also save money. Some states, like Texas, Ohio, and Florida, offer “sales tax holidays,” when school supplies are exempt from sales tax. These savings add up! The best time to shop is generally early July through mid-August — not too early, not too late.
Finally, think about needs vs. wants. A need is something you must have to complete your schoolwork or that’s on your school list — items you or your teacher know you need to succeed. Wants are things that would be nice to have but aren’t essential. You can always save up and buy those later!
